Timberland or TBL is a well-known footwear company that makes footwear and work boots for men and women. These are not sports footwear but well-designed and durable outdoor footwear. Timberland’s ascension as a rugged footwear company in the industry was rocky. From Abington to Timberland

Nathan Swartz, a shoe stitcher bought half interest in Abington Shoe Company, Massachusetts. The company was incorporated in 1933 and Swartz bought his share in 1952. Within three years he acquired the remaining interest in the company at $20000. He brought his 19-year-old son, Sidney on board. Within a year his other son, Herman returned from the Navy and joined the business.

For the next decade, the trio produced and sold handmade footwear through discount channels and stores. These outlets and stores would put house labels on them. Meanwhile, they searched for alternatives to the expensive art of hand-stitching the soles and uppers. In 1965, the Swartzes set up an injection moulding machine. This machine chemically moulded and attached the soles to the uppers.

This process not only produced the footwear 50 cents cheaper per pair but also allowed Abington to raise the price my 20 cents. The added benefit of this process was that the footwear was water resistant. They were selling their boots for $5.75 per pair, wholesale and make a small profit that helped them break even.

Inspiration Strikes

Nathan retired in 1968 leaving the company in the capable hands of his two sons. The brothers moved the company to New Hampshire and set their sights on producing tough waterproof boots. They wanted to make thoroughly waterproof boots that would withstand ravages of time and weather. They found the prototype right under their noses.

Abington’s maintenance man wore a pair of rugged work boots perennially. They were water resistant, comfortable and durable. Those boots were made in Canada by Dunham Company. The Swartzes bought a pair and dissected them; resolute on making an even better version. They persuaded Goodyear to design a synthetic rubber sole. And then used the injection mould machine to bond the polyurethane soles to the genuine leather blond uppers.

Birth and Spread of the Brand

To test these boots for water resistance the brothers would weigh the boots with metal and submerge them in buckets full of dyed water. They would wait for leaks to appear in them. The resulting boots were the first waterproof boots under the brand name “Timberland”. This brand initiated in 1973 was targeted at hardworking blue collars and sold at army-navy stores. Serendipitously, the boots also hit the college campuses.

For the first time, Abington hired Marvin & Leonard, a Boston based advertisement firm to market Timberland shoes. The ad agency president Len Kanzer convinced the Swartzes to aim their ads at upscale buyers in the New Yorker.

This recommendation resulted in these boots being sold at posh retailers such as Lord & Taylor, Saks Fifth Avenue and Bergdorf Goodman. Timberland produced 5000 pairs in 1974 by 1975 the production had grown fivefold and the sale had crossed the million-dollar mark.

By the 1970s Timberland was producing 400, 000 pairs annually and “no-name” boots amounted only 20% of their output. By 1978 they stopped producing them and focused on the Timberland. They renamed Abington as The Timberland Company. The newly incorporated company introduced its casual shoes for men made of water-resistant full grained leather with handsewn uppers and solid brass eyelets. They introduced their deck shoes in 1979 which were marketed aggressively and won endorsements from many bigwigs.

Timberland becomes an International Brand

In 1979, the Italian goods distributor, Giuseppe Veronesi visited the Hampshire factory to order 3000 pairs. He was the president of Ritz Firma, a subsidiary of FinRitz SpA. He picked them as a fashion accessory for the affluent Italians. After selling them in Rome and Milan he began selling Timberland in boutiques throughout Italy. The shoes became a craze and the production picked up to 1.8 million pairs by 1983 with a price tag of $70 – 80 in the US and nearly double in Europe.

Flushed on success and poised to make more waves Timberland was approached by VF Corporation in 1984 to sell out for $60 million. Herman, then 60, wanted to accept and retire but Sidney decided he wanted to do more with the company. Before the bothers could reach an agreement, the offer was withdrawn. The company expanded to Hong Kong, Germany, France, Switzerland, and Turkey. They even exported 490, 000 boots to Italy. By 1985 the worldwide sales hit $68 million.

1986 saw another offer of $60 million made by a former partner of Morgan Stanley and Company. Again, Herman wanted to sell out while Sidney wanted to keep the company. Sidney sought financing from Merrill Lynch and bought Herman’s share for $30 million. The older brother retired and Sidney took over as the President, Chairman and CEO of the company.
