When these controls are not sufficient then Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) is provided.

Specific Footwear Requirements have been specified in the Occupational Safety and Health Administration PPE requirements to safeguard the workers. KEEN build their utility shoes according to these requirements thus meets all the standards.

They meet the ASTM F2412-18 which is the Standard Test Methods for Foot Protection. And the ASTM F 2413-17 which is the Standard Specification for Performance Requirements for Protective Safety Toe Cap Footwear.

The ASTM F 2413-17 covers the testing, minimum design, fit, function, classification requirements and performance criteria for the footwear. The performance criteria cover impact resistance, compression resistance, conductivity protection, metatarsal protection, electrical hazard resistance, puncture protection and static dissipation.

The ASTM specifications are mentioned clearly on one shoe of each pair. The legible mark may be stamped on a pressure sensitive label or stitched on to the tongue, the surface, the quarter lining or the shaft of the shoe. The marking is enclosed in a rectangular border and printed in a four-line format.

Line four is used only when the three sections of the standards have been applied to the footwear. Here is an example –

Line 1 – ASTM F2413-17 indicates that the footwear meets the performance standard F2413 issued in the year 2017.

The line 2 – M I/75/C/75/Mt75 indicates the gender the shoe is meant for – “M” stands for male and “F” stands for female. The “I” indicates an impact resistance rating which is 75 foot-pounds for this shoe. The “C” stands for compress

ion resistance rating which is 75 for this shoe. This means it can withstand 2 500 pounds of compression. The metatarsal designation is indicated by “Mt” which is 75 foot-pounds.

Line 3 and 4 – PR indicates the protection offered by the footwear against specific types of hazards. Conductive properties are indicated by Cd. Electrical hazard resistance properties are indicated by EH. Puncture-resistance is indicating by PR. Footwear designed to reduce or prevent the accumulation of static electricity is indicated by SD.

The Cd footwear protects against the hazards of static electricity build-up. This prevents the ignition of volatile chemicals and explosives. The electrical resistance ranges up to 500000 ohms.

The EH footwear is made of shock-resistant, non-conductive heels and soles. The outsole protects you against incidental or accidental contact with conductors, circuits, wires, apparatus, etc. They can withstand 18000 volts at 60 Hertz for a minute with no leakage current or flow in excess of 1 milliampere in dry conditions.

The SD footwear protects against hazards of low resistance. This reduces the possibility of static electricity and shock. There are SD 100, SD 35 and SD 10 designations based on the following parameters;

SD 100 shoes have a lower limit of 1 megohm or 10⁶ ohms and an upper limit of 100 megohms or 10⁸ ohms. SD 35 shoes have a lower limit of 10⁶ ohms and an upper limit of 35 megohms. SD 10 shoes have a lower limit of 10⁶ ohms and an upper limit of 10 megohms.

PR shoes have a puncture resistant plate between the outsole and insole. This reduces the possibility of any injury by sharp objects that could penetrate through the bottom of the footwear. It is the permanent and integral part of the footwear and tested at 1200 newtons of penetrating force. It is exposed to a 5% salt solution for 24 hours and does not show any corrosion.

Add-on devices such as strap-on toe, foot and metatarsal guards are not allowed by the ASTM as a substitute for protective shoes. These features have to be constructed into the shoe during the manufacturing process. The manufacturer then submits these products to an independent laboratory for testing and the results can be obtained on request. In short, KEEN has taken every precaution to protect you and your feet.
